Used your piece on BHM with my 7/8th English class. Some got mad, some agreed (typical) all wrote good papers on it though. Promised to read "Who Shot Johnny" for next Thursday. They lost a friend to shooting earlier this week. They were impressed that I knew you but unimpressed that I never stayed in touch.

Comment on Hey! Initially, I was stunned to hear the word used in public (and, for the most part, still am). After reading your book, however, I asked myself the following questions: Why do Black people feel the need to hold on to the pain associated with this word? Are younger Blacks liberating their generation from such pain by completely divesting the word of any power? Is their use of this word, in the presence of whites, a signal to whites that power once exercised (with the simple utterance of a word) no longer exists? Is such theorizing on the subject an attempt to make excuses for bad behavior, or is it a matter of freeing ourselves from that "last plantation?"

What do you think?

Comment on Hey! You are very articulate and have a lot of good points. I, however, resent that you state much of the resistance to President Obama is race related. At least for me it's not - I can't spend, save or do anything depending on the color of the skin of the president. I resist president Obama's agenda not because he is black but because I strongly disagree with it as bad for the US and bad for me. I would love to have a black candidate to FOR who represents me but I can say the same about any candidate of any race. I believe most people just want a fair shake and will support anyone they believe will provide that.

Frank: If you think I'm not describing you, why do you think I'm talking about you?

I served my entire 12 years on active duty under Reagan (whom I loathed. I feel fully vindicated about the extent to which his actions helped put us in the awful position we're in today) and Bush 41 (whom I thought misguided and dangerous but basically well-intentioned) twice. Never, ever did I behave as many of President Obama's detractors have, publicly or privately. So, if you don't engage in the kinds of behaviors I routinely criticize, I'm not talking about you. Thanks for thinking me articulate.

Best,

Debra

Comment on Me on the radio Friday, January 15 and tomorrow, January 18

Just heard the Imus interview. Is Debra Dickerson the only person in the entire United States who didn't hear that Harry Reid called BHO a 'light skinned african american'.

So when I heard Rush' comments that BHO was looking to increase his support with both light -and dark-skinned african americans, I found it funny, b/c it was pretty clear that Rush was lampooning Reid and all his defenders in the Democrat party.

Satire of the news, Ma'am, satire.

Dear Grabski: I didn't listen to Limbaugh's entire light-skinned/dark-skinned schtick, but it didn't seem satiric to me. Also, with the disjointed nature of info-gathering these days, I'd have to work to hard to figure out whose comments were reported first. But I have to admit you may have a point. I find him so loathsome (apparently you don't.), perhaps I can only take him literally. But it's not worth the ulcer it would cause me to study Limbaugh live long enough to tell when he was being more satiric than satanic. So, I cede the point.

I'm curious: the site is DebraDickerson.com and written in the first person, obviously by me. Why refer to me in the third person? Maybe my satire setting is truly in need of recalibration... Not offended. Just curious.

Comment on The brave new world of the writing biz

check.
"Book tours" among list of "things not to do"
